FAQ
1. What is a Frame Nailer?
A Frame Nailer refers to tools specifically designed for picture frame assembly. There are two primary types: Picture Frame Driver (Frame Point Driver) and V-Nailer (Frame Wedge Nailer) . Their main difference lies in both the type of fasteners used and their application stage during the framing process:
- Picture Frame Driver / Frame Point Driver
This tool inserts Frame Points (Framer Tabs) along the back edge of the picture frame to hold the glass, artwork, and backing board securely in place. These fasteners can be flexible (for removable artwork) or rigid (for permanent sealing). It is typically used at the final stage of framing. - V-Nailer / Frame Wedge Nailer
This tool drives V-shaped nails (Frame Wedges) into the mitered corners of the frame to join and reinforce the wooden structure. It is often used earlier in the framing process and is essential for structural integrity. V-Nailers can be further divided into:
< Handy V-Nailer > - Compact, manually or pneumatic operated, and ideal for small-batch or DIY use.
< Underpinner > - More powerful and precise, usually pneumatic or foot-operated, suitable for commercial or high-volume framing.
2. What type of nails should I use with my V-Nailer?
V-Nailers use frame wedges rather than traditional straight nails. There are two main types: Cartridge Wedges, which include a shell for fast loading (commonly used in CASSESE machines), and V-nails. Both types are available in hard and soft variants, depending on the wood material you're working with.
For soft type frame wedges, there are two crown size standards:
.AL Type - 10.7 mm crown width, recommended for ALFA underpinners.
.UNI Type - 10.3 mm crown width, compatible with various other brands.
3. How to choose the most suitable V-Nailer for your applications?
Selecting the right V-Nailer depends on your production volume, material type, level of automation, and workspace size. For low-volume or custom framing, a manual V-nailer or hand-operated underpinner is ideal due to its affordability and ease of use. For medium to high-volume production, a pneumatic or foot-operated underpinner is more suitable, offering higher speed and consistency.
Also, check whether your machine supports cartridge wedges or V-nails, and matches the wedge size to your tool specifications to avoid jamming or misfires.
